Advance Testing is a consulting construction materials testing laboratory that has been providing outstanding service to its clients since 1984. We provide both field inspection and laboratory analysis of all construction materials for commercial, private, and public organizations. Currently, we manage work out of five primary offices located in New York, Florida, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.
As a consulting materials testing company, we have deep roots in scientific expertise and construction processes. But our roots are deeper in the virtues we have stood behind for the past four decades which have made Advance Testing a trusted company.

OUR HISTORY
James P. Smith, Jr. started his career working as a quality control technician for an asphalt contracting and aggregate supply firm working his way up to Chief Quality Control Technician. During this time, Jim was able to develop his business skills and become a highly respected materials testing technician.
In 1984, Jim founded Advance Testing Company, Inc. with his station wagon and some credit cards. It would take a year before he was able to move the company’s entire operation out of his home and into a 1,500 ft2 building in Newburgh, New York.
For the next eight years, Advance Testing worked to establish itself as a serious competitor for materials testing and inspection contracts in the Mid-Hudson region. Advance Testing worked around the clock, both in the field and in the lab, to support the needs of its clients, striving to develop a reputation as a provider of responsive, high quality services.
As the amount of work steadily increased, the number of employees grew from a mere handful of individuals to as many as forty during peak construction season. In order to increase the core staff’s knowledge base and develop multi-disciplined employees who were experienced in a variety of materials testing fields, Advance Testing instituted an aggressive construction materials testing and inspection training program for all employees.
Beyond its immediate workforce, Advance Testing additionally established training and work programs for high school and college students. Advance Testing’s commitment to its personnel was instrumental in expanding both its scope of services and its staff’s notoriety within the construction industry in the late 80’s and early 90’s.
By 1994, Advance Testing had outgrown its location and moved to a new 7,000 ft2 location in Campbell Hall, NY. At this time, transportation sector Owner-Agencies were introducing new Quality Assurance specifications emphasizing Contractor Quality Control in the areas of Hot Mix Asphalt production and laydown, as well as a series of new test devices and methods that would change the industry. Advance Testing recognized the benefits of these changes and committed resources and personnel to establish the firm as leader in the area.
With Advance Testing’s continued commitment to training, a new company, Atech Center, Inc. was formed. Atech Center has grown to become one of the principal developers of several construction materials training programs offered through the Northeast Transportation Technician Certification Program and the Associated General Contractors of New York/New York State Department of Transportation Hot Mix Asphalt Density Testing Inspector Certification Program. Advance Testing was also instrumental in providing technicians to staff New York State’s first experimental Quality Assurance pilot program.
In the years to come, Advance Testing found that additional expansions were necessary to support its growing client base. In 1997, a New England office was opened in West Stockbridge, Massachusetts to better serve contracts for precast concrete inspection and testing services.
In 1998, expansion was again necessary at the corporate office in Campbell Hall, New York, which led to the reconstruction of a nearby property that was transformed into Advance Testing’s corporate offices and primary laboratory. This 15,000 sq. ft. facility includes a state-of-the-art laboratory with multiple task-oriented workspaces for continued research and development, allowing Advance Testing to remain at the forefront of the materials testing industry.
In 2012, Advance Testing expanded its reach into the southern tier of New York, design and constructing a brand new laboratory facility in Harpursville, New York.
