LABORATORY TESTING

Asphalt

Asphalt mix design services available include the full range of sampling, specimen fabrication, testing, and report submittals required under most Owner-Agencies mix design acceptance procedures. Capabilities in product development include dense-graded hot and warm mix asphalt mixtures, stone mastic asphalt products, open-graded surface treatments, and a variety of other special mixtures. Laboratories are optimized for the most efficient workflow, with sufficient equipment capacity to enable the development of multiple products simultaneously. Routine testing on bituminous mixtures includes bulk specific gravity, maximum theoretical specific gravity, binder content, abson recovery, penetration, and tensile strength ratio. In addition to routine testing, more advanced performance testing services available include accelerated distress testing using the Hamburg loaded wheel method as well as determination of the dynamic modulus and flow number with the simple performance test (previously known as the asphalt mix performance test, or AMPT).

Concrete & Masonry

Laboratory testing services for concrete include aggregate constituent source properties, petrography, time of set and drying shrinkage of cement, concrete mix design (batching, mixing, plastic concrete testing, specimen fabrication, curing, compressive and flexural strength testing) as well as performance testing (Coulomb testing for chloride ion penetration, length of mortar bar change to asses Alkali Silica Reactivity (ASR) potential, modulus of elasticity). The fully accredited laboratory is also high-performance (>7,000 PSI) concrete capable. Laboratory testing services for masonry include mix proportioning and testing to determine flow, initial set time, compressive strength and various other physical characteristics of plastic mortars and grouts; compressive strength, absorption and unit weight for brick and concrete block (both normal and lightweight varieties), and compressive strength masonry prisms up to three standard blocks in height.

Soil & Aggregate

Laboratory testing services for soils include both basic soils testing (gradation, moisture, liquid and plastic limit, moisture density relationship, organic content, etc.) as well as more advanced test methods (triaxial permeability, direct and indirect shear, etc.). Laboratory testing services for aggregates include distribution, specific gravity, angularity, unit weight, sand equivalent, soundness, and abrasion. Laboratories are well equipped with sufficient capacity to provide results within the timeframe required by our clientele, and will implement multiple work shifts when merited by workload.
